Japan: Famous Crosswalks
For those of you whom have seen Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, you will remember the famous scene where the orange RX-7 drifted through an intersection filled with people. This intersection was the famous crosswalk at Shinjuku. There are many of these around Tokyo and its pretty much the way of the land. First the cars go, then everything stops for everyone to walk in any manner they want.
The reason I bring this up is because I have come to the realization that people only watch for cars when they are J-walking. Otherwise, they will just walk in all directions humanly possible. Today, on my way to work, people kept walking into the street WHILE I was coming. It was interesting to see them pause for cars, look up to see me coming right after the car, and act as if I wasn't there by proceeding to walk right in front of me! Is it because I'm a gaijin or is because they just don't care about bicycles? It wouldn't hurt as much as getting hit by a car right?
