Japan: Clubbing in Tokyo
Okay well I am not a pro on clubbing in Tokyo, and my wife probably won't let me go again... but I know enough to write this blog post so here goes!
I have been clubbing in Tokyo 4 times in the past 3 months that I have been here. I have also been out to karaoke and some other silly stuff like that in the evenings in popular areas like Shibuya, Shinjuku, Harajuku, Roppongi, and Azabu. The most fun I had was when I went club hopping to 3 different clubs in the span of 45 minutes, all of which were notably excellent clubs. I am also meaning to go again in the next couple of months as my favourite singer is coming to Ageha in the summer. If you are unaware of Ageha's international reputation, it is known as having the best sound system in Japan and my personal favourite: a heated outdoor pool.
Okay, so lets get down to the nitty gritty. First of all, lines for clubs are generally next to nothing unless there is a special event going on. Last time I went to Club Asia, there was a famous group called Capsule playing (semi-famous) and the line was about 45 minutes long at 12. Club Asia also SUPPOSEDLY fits around 500 people. If you want to take my advice on where to go in Tokyo, I would say Club Asia is the place to be. The crowd is young (20 - 25) and the place is a lot of fun. They have live dancers, secret areas, 3 bars, a main stage with normally a famous list of Dj's.
Aside from going to Club Asia, I have also been to other clubs like Gaspanic in Shibuya, Heartland in Roppongi, Vanilla in Roppongi, Yellow in Azabu, and a few others that I can't remember the names of. In terms of location, Club Asia is, in my opinion, the ONLY place to go to in Shibuya that has kids my age and music I like. If you want to pick up old women, go to Roppongi. If you want to pick up men, go anywhere lol. In Vanilla though, I met some really cute Japanese girls from Kyoto who just graduated so perhaps there are still some places free of the 28 year olds that I so often met.
Arguably the best time I had clubbing was at a place called Yellow in Azabu (north of Roppongi). The crowd was hot, the place was rather big and mysterious compared to Club Asia, and the music was nice. Its a generally well liked place and people have a high opinion of the people who play there. Also, it was VERY hard to find the place. You literally turn into a street full of houses and you will find Yellow smack down in the middle of the street. It's an underground club anyway so it's still pretty big.
One of my biggest complaints about clubbing in Tokyo is the upfront cost to get in. It cost me $70 bones for cover last time when I took my Chiaki to Club Asia (I paid for her). This price also includes 2 free drinks per person. The first time I went clubbing cost me $35 dollars cover at a famous club called Vanilla. That name is old now and it has been replaced by ... I forgot what =p. If you go, ask for Vanilla and they will know where you want to go. Vanilla is by far one of the biggest clubs in Tokyo. It has 4 floors and all different types of music. A sure place to meet new people who like any kind of music.
Anyway, next time I will post on places to avoid for clubbing, etc. Now I'm gonna go to sleep. Moving to a new apartment on Monday so I gotta pack in the morning. Also, I'm still bitter that the apartment cost me 4 gs and yet its so small.
