Japan: My first run in with the police!

The day is Tuesday, May 22, 2007 ...

Okay this happened a little while ago and it wasn't so bad. BUT it was my first run in with the police, so its important to mention!

So this is what happened: I was racing home after working on the weekend (yes I work weekends sometimes) and while racing home I was trying to avoid traffic. So the thing was there was a car coming ahead of me and a car behind me so when the car was behind me I would stay in the same lane as it, and when it passed I changed to the other side of the road. So anyway, while biking home I saw a funny police man riding his bicycle like one of those midgets in the circus. I looked at him, he looked at me, and I just kinda chuckled a little to myself, which he probably saw to my idiocy. Anyway, while doing these road side to road side maneuvers, he saw me and whistled me down literally outside my house. He told me that I shouldn't go side to side and he wanted to ask me a few questions like what I am doing in the country, where did I come from, what's my residency etc. He even went as far as phoning in my bicycle registration! (By the way, he said everything in Japanese and I understood fully ;), sugoi eh!). After he called in the police station, checked out the true owner of the bike (my host mum), and reminded me not to do any crazy road rage again, he bowed and cheerfly got back on his bike and biked off. I wouldn't mind getting stopped again if all cops are like that. Gotta love japan.

Anyway, moral of the story, don't laugh at chubby policeman who ride bicycles like bears in a circus.
