First Week Impressions

The day is Friday, May 5, 2006 ... Well I almost finished it! My first week at work... this is how it went:

Monday:
I arrived at the office at 8:30, only to be surprised by the number of co-op students this summer at Mitel. There were about 15 students, I really did not know what to expect. I think because we were all jammed in a small area, it was very intimidating. I proceeded with the actual orientation where we were lead into a quiet room and absolutely no one talked. Man that was tense! My manager came and met me and we were off.

He lead me to a nice cubicle office with a 2.75 ghz Dell Computer with a brand new Mitel single line in phone and plenty of space. He showed me the gym, the cafe, and the library (hygiene factors) and then let me off to ''work''. Essentially I did nothing for the hour and such that I had to wait to meet the Product Line Managers that would be directing what I work on.

I met the PLR managers and we talked for around 20 minutes on what to do. I was going to start research on Call Centers or otherwise known as "Contact Centers", in the new millenium. I briefly took some breaks and went around to explore the area. I met another co-op student from Carleton and he''s pretty chill. reminds me of Saurabh.

Tuesday:
I went to the gym to check it out and it has excellent facilities. No one is there and they have everything Carleton has... but less ( a little less ). Anyway, I got a membership form so I could actually use the stuff inside. Anyway, I had lunch with Rangan and the day went by pretty slowly. 2nd day I think is harder because they leave you unsupervised and you just have to read a book. Not too too fun but it was definately a learning experience.

Wednesday:3rd day seemt to go by so fast! I got a lot of reading done at the couches downstairs and found out about what my co-cubiclers are doing here at Mitel. Organizational behaviour helped a little when I was able to discuss the importance of cross-functional teams. Anyway, had lunch, yada yada yada, came home! Wednesday night was so fun and I cannot leave that out of this topic.

Wednesday night I played Volleyball with all these guys who have been playing for like 4+ years. First time I had an enjoyable game! It was very difficult because I had never played volleyball indoor in a competitive environment. There is so much movement before and in between plays that I really had no idea what was going on. After that I went to

Thursday:
Went to the gym at 8:30 with Martin. Man he knows a lot about working out! He could be a lot bigger I think if he had a proper diet! Anyway, I felt SO SORE after that. I was so sore from volleyball too! My legs never had such a good work out before! Anyway, Martin said my right arm (volleyball hitting arm) was a lot weaker than my right (thats a first).

Earlier that week I found out that the guys play soccer at lunch time infront of Mitel. I headed over at 12 oclock and there were some damn good players! I quickly joined in and I think I was alright, no where near as good as most of them. The score was something like 3-1 when I joined in. I pulled some sick moves on a few guys, practically undressing them, but other times got owned by their bald captain ronaldhino.

At night I went to Zaphods to watch DJ Dylan D (http://www.badmanpress.com), my buddy from school, break it down with an hour of the best Jungle music in a DJ competition. He was pretty damn good, same with his dancing ass routine that was quite enjoyable (Basically whenever he got a record, he would turn around to look for it while shaking his ass to the crowd). Anyway, I am not sure if he won or not but I definately had a good time. I also met Bronwyn''s boyfriend who was a huge trance addict. I got out of that scene a good 3 years ago but I still love the stuff. Apparently, he''s a really good friend of Max Graham and Brad Copeland, two amazing trance artists. I''m gonna start playing soccer with him, pretty chill guy!

FRIDAY: LAST DAY OF WORK FOR WEEK 1!!!
